I actually bought a turkey. I don't really do holidays. I do holy days, but not holidays. (Note the difference there?) I wasn't going to get a turkey. They're expensive. But we went to the store for cat litter, and bought a turkey instead 'cuz they were on sale.
A fucking 22lb turkey that is. It was HUGE.
I was so freaking excited getting the turkey, half because I have been craving turkey for like, 3 years and because it will give us a ton of leftovers. So I made the turkey; and it took only 3 1/2 hours to cook. Surprised me too. I grilled a couple potatoes and ate. It was simple, and good.
So after we finished eating I finished breaking down the turkey and separated the white and dark meat. I'm currently boiling up the bones to get off the meat and to make stock. Once it's all done (going to have to make sure the bones break so marrow boils out into the stock) I'm going to freeze some of it for future uses, and then tomorrow we are going to make soup! :D I am actually really happy about this.
While I was breaking down the turkey it occurred to me that this used to be a living creature so I ensured to give it honor and I talked to Hel about it a bit.
Also, while I was breaking down that bird, I was burning my fingers. I had (and probably still have) turkey under my finger nails. There's turkey everywhere. I had it on my clothes, all over my hands, I think I even had some on my face. And I couldn't help but think that I wasn't the first woman to do this. Nor will I be the last. This is something that women (and men!!) have been doing for millennia. It was kind of wonderful, ,to participate in this... ritual, really.
Tomorrow I'm also going to be baking chocolate chip cookies. I'm excited for that too.
And now I'm going to relax.
